Humbled to see my name featured on the cover of Michael Hone’s book, The Worlds’ Greatest All-Male Film Directors ( Amazon). And featured in between my two mentors, Duroy and Bjorn. But can’t help but think we’re an endangered species: Poole, J.Brian, Deveau, Sterling, Travis, Douglas, Higgins are long gone…
Inevitably, “greatest” is a relative adjective. Hone writes about the directors who mattered the most to his own journey. Many other filmmakers are omitted and they may very well matter more to one reader or the other. But I owe Hone 2 thanks: for his work on this neglected genre of ours. And for his generous review of Hotel Italia (“incredibly handsome men made to look their best”). “As of this 2020 writing”, he says, “Kristen Bjorn is 63, a man, who, along with Lucas Kazan, 55, remain the greatest hopes for the homage and adulation due to all-boy male beauty”. While I certainly don’t deserve the comparison, a pat on the back is always welcome. Thank you, Michael.

Excerpts from an interview FRESHMEN published in 2007. I wouldn’t answer any differently today…
1. What makes your movies, your style, even your models different? How would
you describe your style….
Colleague Kristen Bjorn refers to my movies as “bucolic”. I would hope he isn’t talking of the pastoral settings only. Rather of my quest for beauty. For a Paradise Lost of beautiful men and exotic locales. Raunch, as I see it in most American porn, does very little for me. Nothing wrong with it,
if that gets you off. But I’d like my porn –the porn I watch and the porn I strive to produce– to be erotic and visually spectacular. I’d like it to aim for higher production values, more romance and richer, less formulaic sex. I’d like it to spellbind us the way Bjorn, Duroy and Higgins have
time and time again. Proof that sexual heat and beauty aren’t mutually exclusive. Nor should they be.
2. What quality do you look for in your performers?
We all look for a handsome face, a chiseled body and a powerful tool. Sometimes we luck out and find all three attributes wrapped up in one model. More often than not, we may have to settle for two out of three. The order of preference, however, sets one producer apart from the other, one vision of eroticism (and voyeurism) from the other. William Higgins and I would put face first, dick last. Others would put dick first… I suspect these producers are making the most money!
3. How do you define sexy?
This is a tough one. Because being sexy has little to do with being beautiful. It is less about aesthetics than it is about body language and the chemistry between two bodies.
Upon wrapping production, Derek and I visited with George Duroy in Bratislava. Derek had long been a BelAmi fan and I was happy to introduce him to the boys. Sexy Ion Dovidov took Derek out to the clubs and director/producer George Duroy gave him a taste of Czech hospitality, showing him around Prague. Fast forward to Journey‘s release: the great expectations led to extra-ordinary visibility, especially in Italy: magazine covers, posters, full-page ads, TV and radio interviews… I didn’t waste any time and began a second round of casting calls for Journey 2. I flew Derek back to Italy for the first gay porn star appearance on stage in an Italian club and at the Misex, Milan’s yearly trade show. News of Derek and the upcoming castings were everywhere –from the main papers (LaRepubblica) to the gay press. With the glamor and the excitement I haven’t seen since. Pictured here, super star Derek Cameron in his “Journey” days.
My little tribute to friend/mentor George Duroy. And the label that has forever changed gay porn. As printed in “Justusboys” mag,
